Writing a blog is kind of hard. I never know what to say or if it is even interesting enough for anyone to read. But isn't that the point of a blog? Its like a digital diary that we can share with the world and say whatever we want. People have been blogging since the mid 90's, which if we are being honest, most of us who read blogs were babies or not even born yet.
The fact that the internet has made the world so huge and so small is amazing. I remember getting my first phone at 12 years old. It was way before flip phones were even a thing. The only thing I did was text my dad when he was on work trips. But it brought us close when he was far away. When I was 14, we got our first computer because my mom was a secretary and she had gotten one for free from work. I couldn't tell you what brand it was, but it was the generic grey/cream color that had a huge monitor and hard drive. And it wasn't until I was in college, 2008, that my parents finally got wifi.
I remember the first time I used Skype, in 2009, to talk to my mom who was in New Mexico and I was in California. I had totaled my car and we were trying to decide on a new one to get when I went home on Christmas break. In 2013, I used FaceTime to tell my mom I was pregnant because we were still states away. I was able to spend time with my mom in the hospital when I was 37 weeks pregnant and she had a massive stroke that left her unable to speak. I was able to talk to the doctor who was advising us to take her off life support. My mom got to see my daughter before we could be cleared to travel. And now that my mom has been gone for three years, I have used Skype every other day to talk to my dad and he has watched my daughter grow up.
Technology has brought us together in ways our grandparents could never have imagined. My grandmother, who is my only grandparent left, is now 84 years old. She has lived through so much change. And as I begin to enter my 30's, I wonder what drastic changes I will see. In just the last few years we all have gone from dial up to having more technology in our pockets than launched the first ship into space.
